Picture Prompts for Creative Writing: 142 Ideas for Students

Picture prompts are a great way to get students’ creative juices flowing and inspire them to write stories, poems, and more. These image-driven prompts are accessible and engaging, making them perfect for sparking imagination and encouraging critical thinking.

Since 2016, we have been publishing our Picture Prompts series four days a week. Each prompt is designed to inspire students to write and express themselves in unique ways. Whether they want to write a short story, a poem, or even share a personal experience, these prompts provide a starting point for creative exploration.

For the 2023-24 school year, we have compiled a collection of all the picture prompts we have published. These prompts cover a wide range of topics and themes, from Y.A. Thrillers to spooky stories. Whether students are analyzing illustrations, graphs, or charts, or sharing their opinions on important issues, there is a prompt for everyone.

In addition to the prompts for the current school year, you can also explore our archives for previous years’ prompts. We have collections of 125 picture prompts for creative and narrative writing, as well as 25 spooky images for writing scary stories. These resources are a valuable tool for teachers looking to build literacy skills, promote critical thinking, and foster creativity in the classroom.

If you are interested in learning more about how to use Picture Prompts effectively, we have a three-minute tutorial video and an on-demand webinar available. These resources provide helpful tips and strategies for incorporating picture prompts into your lesson plans.

We also invite teachers to share their experiences using picture prompts with students. If you have creative ideas for how to use photos, illustrations, and graphics to inspire writing, we would love to hear from you in the comments.

Picture prompts are a versatile and engaging tool for encouraging students to write and think creatively. By incorporating these prompts into your classroom, you can help students develop their writing skills, explore new ideas, and express themselves in meaningful ways.
