Celebrating 30 Years: Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr.’s Historic Spacewalk

Dallas, TX – It has been three decades since the groundbreaking moment when former CEO Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr. made history as the first African American astronaut to walk in space. On February 9, 1995, during the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-63, Dr. Harris embarked on a mission that would change the course of space exploration forever. Today, the National Math and Science Initiative proudly commemorates this monumental achievement, highlighting Dr. Harris’ unwavering dedication to STEM education and his ongoing impact on future generations.

A Lifelong Dream Realized

Dr. Harris’ fascination with space began at the age of 13, inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. From that moment on, he set his sights on becoming an astronaut, a dream that would lead him to pursue degrees in biology and medicine. Following his education, Dr. Harris completed a residency at the prestigious Mayo Clinic and a fellowship at NASA’s Ames Research Center, laying the foundation for his future in space exploration.

In 1990, Dr. Harris was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would see him participate in two space shuttle missions. His pivotal role as a mission specialist on STS-55 in 1993 set the stage for his historic spacewalk two years later during the STS-63 mission. Dr. Harris’ groundbreaking achievement not only marked a significant milestone in space exploration but also solidified his commitment to inspiring future generations through STEM education.

A Legacy of Leadership and Advocacy

Dr. Harris’ impact extends far beyond his time in space. As a founding board member and former CEO of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), he has been a driving force in advocating for equitable access to high-quality STEM education. Through initiatives like the Harris Foundation and Institute, Dr. Harris has worked tirelessly to expand STEM opportunities for underserved students, leaving an indelible mark on countless young minds.

In recognition of his dedication to advancing STEM education, Dr. Harris was honored with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in August 2024, a testament to his enduring legacy and ongoing commitment to inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders. Reflecting on his own journey, Dr. Harris emphasizes the importance of nurturing curiosity and belief in one’s potential, especially during crucial stages like middle school when students may begin to doubt their abilities.

Empowering Educators, Inspiring Students

The need for high-quality STEM education has never been more pressing, with STEM occupations projected to experience exponential growth in the coming years. The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts a nearly 11% increase in STEM jobs by 2031, underscoring the importance of preparing students for the future workforce. NMSI’s Professional Development Services play a vital role in equipping educators with the tools and resources needed to cultivate the next generation of STEM leaders, mirroring Dr. Harris’ vision for a more inclusive and innovative STEM landscape.

To date, NMSI’s initiatives have reached over 2.7 million students, 70,000 teachers, 1,800 high schools, and 44 universities nationwide, fostering increased confidence and interest in STEM subjects among students. Notably, Black students mentored by NMSI-trained educators have shown a marked rise in STEM career aspirations, highlighting the transformative impact of dedicated educators and accessible STEM education.
