Educators are increasingly confident about incorporating technology into their teaching methods, with many expressing cautious optimism about the use of AI in education. This sentiment is reflected in the 2024 Educator Confidence Report from HMH, which surveyed over 1,200 educators on various K-12 issues.

The report reveals that educators are embracing technology to enhance teaching and student achievement, with 97 percent feeling confident in their ability to use technology effectively. Tools that integrate instruction with supplemental practice, intervention, and assessment on a single platform are seen as potential game-changers by 66 percent of educators.

Generative AI, a key focus of the report, is gaining traction among educators, with a 5x increase in its use within just one year. Educators who use generative AI find it valuable, time-saving, and plan to utilize it more in the upcoming school year. However, there are concerns about potential issues such as plagiarism, student over-dependence, and the need for adequate professional development to ensure ethical and effective use of AI tools.

Despite the positive outlook on technology integration, educators still face challenges in the profession. Mental health concerns, inadequate compensation, and funding shortages are top issues that impact educators’ sentiment towards teaching. While there has been some improvement in educators’ positivity since the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant percentage still express negative feelings about the state of teaching and learning.

Jack Lynch, CEO of HMH, acknowledges the challenges educators have faced and emphasizes the importance of leveraging technology to enhance classroom experiences. Francie Alexander, Senior Vice President of Research at HMH, highlights the need for ongoing support and professional development for teachers to provide quality education to every student.

Looking ahead, there is optimism about the potential of technology to improve teaching practices and support educators in their vital role. As educators navigate the evolving landscape of education, continued investment in resources, training, and technology will be essential to drive positive outcomes for both teachers and students.
