Speaker of the House Mike Johnson recently held a news conference with Republican committee chairs, including House Education and the Workforce Committee Chair Virginia Foxx, to address the issue of rising antisemitism at university protests across the nation. Columbia University is under scrutiny and could face subpoenas if it does not comply with a U.S. House investigation into reports of antisemitism on college campuses.

Foxx expressed frustration with Columbia University’s lack of cooperation, stating that the committee has been requesting information for months with little success. The committee is specifically seeking information related to the encampment on campus, the occupation of Hamilton Hall, disciplinary actions taken, and the communications of the Board of Trustees. Foxx emphasized the importance of understanding how university administrators responded to these events and what measures they are taking to address the situation.

The committee launched its investigation back in February in response to reports of antisemitism and harassment at Columbia University during student protests surrounding Israel and Gaza. Despite sending multiple requests for information, the university has failed to comply, prompting the threat of subpoenas. The deadline for Columbia University to produce the requested documents and information is set for August 8.

Foxx highlighted the urgency of the situation, particularly in ensuring the safety of Jewish students on campus. The committee aims to review the documents before the fall semester begins to address any concerns and take appropriate actions. House Republicans have been vocal about addressing allegations of antisemitism on university campuses, with hearings showcasing the experiences of Jewish students facing harassment.

The issue of rising antisemitism at universities has not only led to resignations among university leaders but has also become a political focal point in highlighting divisions within the Democratic party. By pressing for accountability and transparency from institutions like Columbia University, the committee aims to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their background or beliefs.
