Out-of-school time (OST) programs have garnered significant attention in recent years, particularly in the wake of pandemic-related school closures that have left a lasting impact on students across the nation. While the primary focus of extended day programs often centers on academic outcomes, the potential of these programs to address a broader issue—the student mental health crisis—cannot be overlooked. By reimagining OST programs, we have a unique opportunity to enhance students’ mental well-being. The California Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) stands as a beacon of hope, offering a blueprint that could revolutionize the educational landscape and elevate students’ chances of success both inside and outside the classroom.

Connecting with students on a personal level and fostering their engagement is at the heart of successful learning. A recent study highlighted four key findings on student engagement, emphasizing the pivotal role it plays in inspiring academic growth. To truly touch the lives of students and ignite their passion for learning, it is essential to establish meaningful connections and create a sense of belonging in the educational environment. This resonates deeply with my own experience growing up in Dublin, Ireland, where I had the privilege of attending a school that embraced a character-focused approach to education.

At the John Scotus School, founded by the parents of my close friend Nick Telford, we were immersed in a curriculum that transcended traditional boundaries. Philosophy, mindfulness practices, and daily physical activities—from swimming to martial arts and team sports—formed the cornerstone of our educational journey. My affinity for soccer, a sport I shared with Nick, led us to pursue coaching opportunities early on, laying the foundation for our future endeavors in after-school programs. Our commitment to enriching the lives of students through sports and holistic learning experiences has been deeply ingrained in our ethos.

The growing need for support in nurturing students’ mental health is undeniable. Recent reports have underscored the alarming rise in mental health challenges among adolescents, pointing to a pressing national emergency that demands urgent attention. The correlation between student well-being and academic outcomes has been well-documented, emphasizing the critical role that mental health plays in shaping educational success. As schools grapple with these complex issues, the time constraints of the traditional school day pose a significant challenge in addressing students’ holistic needs.

California’s monumental investment in OST programs through the ELOP initiative marks a historic opportunity to reshape the educational landscape and prioritize students’ well-being. With a multi-billion-dollar commitment to expanding learning opportunities, California is paving the way for other states to follow suit and reimagine the role of out-of-school time in nurturing students’ physical, mental, and academic growth. This transformative approach hinges on engaging students in a holistic manner, fostering strong relationships, and creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and empowered to thrive.

The profound impact of engagement on students’ lives cannot be overstated. Drawing from insights gleaned through years of coaching, I have witnessed firsthand how meaningful connections can transform students’ attitudes towards learning and instill a sense of confidence and belonging. The Science of Learning and Development highlights the importance of building trusting relationships as a cornerstone of student success, underscoring the role of expanded learning programs in fostering mentorship-focused connections that inspire students to unlock their full potential.

A poignant example of this transformative power is embodied in the story of Ellie, a shy student who blossomed on the soccer field and ultimately earned a scholarship to a prestigious university, thanks to the support and mentorship she received through our program. Ellie’s journey exemplifies the profound impact that caring coaches and supportive peers can have on a student’s academic and personal growth, underscoring the transformative potential of expanded learning initiatives.

As districts across California continue to reap the benefits of their ELOP programs, I am hopeful that their success stories will serve as a catalyst for nationwide change. By reimagining out-of-school time and fostering innovative partnerships between community organizations and school districts, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and holistic approach to education that empowers all students to thrive. The journey towards student well-being and academic success is a collective endeavor that requires unwavering dedication, empathy, and a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of learners. Together, we can shape a brighter future for all students.
