Boost Third Grade Reading Proficiency with NC Virtual Academy Summer Camp & Reading Eggs

North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) and 3P Learning have recently shared the positive outcomes of an online summer learning camp designed to enhance reading proficiency for third grade students. Over 70 third graders who had not yet demonstrated proficiency on the End-of-Grade (EOG) test or Read to Achieve test took part in the three-week camp.

Results from the camp revealed that after engaging with 3P Learning’s Reading Eggs program for just 30 minutes each day over the span of three weeks, an impressive 77% of students displayed significant improvements in reading skills. This progress enabled them to advance from grade three to grade four, showcasing the effectiveness of the program in boosting literacy levels among young learners.

The camp also produced notable results on the DIBELS 8th Edition Reading Assessment. Seventy-three percent of participants exhibited improvement in crucial areas such as phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension from the end of the school year to the summer benchmark assessment. These findings underscore the value of targeted interventions in supporting students’ literacy development.

NCVA Principal Kelly Shanahan emphasized the importance of providing young learners with the necessary time, resources, and support to enhance their reading abilities. She commended the students for their dedication to improving these essential skills that will serve them well in the future. Shanahan noted that the majority of students voted Reading Eggs as their favorite camp session, highlighting the program’s engaging and effective approach to literacy instruction.

Reading Eggs, which aligns with Level III ESSA requirements, offers a dynamic learning experience grounded in the five pillars of reading. By focusing on building foundational literacy skills, Reading Eggs helps early learners become proficient readers and motivated students. The program caters to various age groups and skill levels, creating personalized learning paths for students based on their placement test results. Educators leading the NCVA summer camp selected Reading Eggs due to its positive impact on student engagement and achievement.

Allison Ireland, director of product at 3P Learning, expressed delight at the measurable improvement in reading proficiency observed during the three-week camp. She highlighted the significance of accessible, practical, and engaging programs in driving academic growth among students. Ireland noted the enthusiastic response from both students and teachers, underscoring the positive impact of the NCVA summer camp on young readers.

In North Carolina, the Read to Achieve law mandates that third graders who score at Level 1 or 2 in reading on the third grade EOG test are retained and not promoted to the fourth grade. To advance to fourth grade, students can demonstrate proficiency on a Read to Achieve test or complete a reading portfolio to earn a “good cause exemption.” Additionally, students who do not show proficiency after third grade and do not qualify for a good cause exemption are required to attend a summer reading camp under the Read to Achieve law.
