Knoxville College, a historically Black institution with a rich history dating back to 1875, has recently taken significant strides towards regaining accreditation after decades of struggle. The college, located in Tennessee, lost its accreditation in 1997 due to financial issues and mismanagement of student aid. However, after years of hard work and dedication, Knoxville College has now filed an application with the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) in hopes of achieving accreditation once again.
Challenges and Setbacks

Following the loss of accreditation in 1997, the institution faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and issues with enrollment and state authorization. In 2015, Knoxville College was forced to close its doors temporarily due to these issues, with just 11 students enrolled at the time. The college struggled to maintain its campus infrastructure, facing ongoing challenges with deteriorating facilities and lack of resources.
Revitalization Efforts
Despite these challenges, Knoxville College has made significant efforts to revitalize and rebuild its reputation. In 2018, the college began enrolling students again after implementing fundraising initiatives and revitalization efforts. The institution has been working tirelessly to improve its financial stability and academic offerings in order to regain accreditation and federal financial aid eligibility. With a renewed focus on sustainability and success, Knoxville College has been making strides towards achieving its long-term goals.
Leadership Transition
In June, Knoxville College President Leonard Adams announced his decision to step down from his position at the end of September. Adams, who had been leading the college through its accreditation process, played a crucial role in the institution’s progress. The college is currently in the process of searching for a new leader who will guide them through this critical period and ensure their continued success. Board Chair Michael Bowie commended Adams for his efforts in moving the college forward and securing approval for the TRACS accreditation package.
