Dear Members and Allies,
We are approaching a significant presidential election amidst a backdrop of various social issues such as racism, LGBTQIA+ discrimination, book banning, anti-abortion extremism, and attempts to politicize our schools and courts. It is crucial for the education funding community to come together in a bipartisan manner to defend democracy and support public schools, regardless of our political beliefs.
Recently, we marked the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, a milestone in ending school segregation. However, the legacy of Brown raises questions about ongoing oppression and settler colonialism. To understand this legacy, we can learn from influential figures like Nikole Hannah-Jones, Lani Guinier, and Ibram X. Kendi on how education can combat systemic issues.
Despite our shared values of diversity and inclusion, the education sector has sometimes hindered social justice progress by favoring certain groups over others. As we approach upcoming elections, it is essential to reflect on whether our actions promote a culture of democracy or align with agendas that undermine it.
Our commitment to a nonpartisan vision of democracy is paramount. Philanthropy is not just about giving—it is about supporting each other and rejecting oppression. It is about striving for equity and acknowledging our past mistakes.
I am excited to introduce two new initiatives that align with our commitment to education and democracy. The Fund for Campus Liberation aims to support student activists who challenge dominant narratives and advocate for change. We aim to raise $5 million by September 1, with initial seed grants from generous donors.
Similarly, the Fund for Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Democracy seeks to amplify the voices of students and educators advocating for social justice and increased education funding. With a target of $10 million, this initiative will engage with various groups to promote these values.
Additionally, we have planned a series of webinars for the upcoming months, focusing on key topics related to democratic education. These discussions will provide valuable insights for our members and allies to engage with.
To further support our cause, you can visit our merch store and explore a range of products that promote our message of combating polarization. By engaging with our resources and initiatives, you contribute to our shared goal of advancing education and democracy.
I am grateful to be part of this community that values diversity, rejects polarization, and prioritizes education. Your feedback and support are invaluable as we work together towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
Warm regards,
Executive Director of BLOB
