A recent national survey conducted by CASEL and RAND revealed a significant increase in social and emotional learning (SEL) implementation in K-12 schools across the United States. The survey found that by the 2023-24 school year, 83 percent of school principals reported using an SEL curriculum, up from 76 percent in the previous school year and 46 percent in the 2017-2018 school year.

The data also showed that 49 states and the District of Columbia have at least one supportive policy promoting SEL in schools. Educators in states with more supportive SEL policies reported higher levels of SEL implementation in their schools, highlighting the impact of state-level policies on the adoption of SEL programs.

Dr. Alexandra Skoog-Hoffman, CASEL Senior Director of Research & Learning, emphasized the importance of prioritizing SEL as part of long-term academic recovery. Despite challenges such as funding shifts and political divides, educators and school leaders are recognizing the value of SEL in creating positive school environments and supporting student learning.

Investing in SEL has also been beneficial for teachers, as data showed that greater investment in SEL correlated with teachers feeling more supported in implementing SEL strategies. While educators still face barriers such as funding and lack of support, increased investment in SEL can provide teachers with the time, professional learning, and community support needed to effectively implement SEL programs.

The report highlighted the importance of state and local policy solutions in supporting educators and school leaders in implementing SEL initiatives. States with supportive SEL policies, including K-12 SEL standards and integration of SEL into academic content, reported fewer barriers to implementation, increased community support, and more professional learning opportunities for educators.

CASEL is calling on policymakers at all levels to prioritize SEL as a central part of the educational experience for all students. In collaboration with districts nationwide, CASEL has been working to study and scale high-quality SEL programs. The SEL Fellows Academy provides an opportunity for leaders to support the social and emotional development of students and educators in their districts.

Overall, the findings from the survey indicate a growing recognition of the importance of SEL in creating positive school climates, supporting student learning, and addressing the social and emotional needs of both students and educators. By investing in SEL and implementing supportive policies, schools can create environments that promote student well-being and academic success.
