In 2023, ransomware attacks targeted 108 U.S. school districts, more than double the previous year. These attacks have not only disrupted schools but also resulted in rising recovery costs, averaging $3.76 million so far in 2024.

One of the main reasons why schools are vulnerable to cyber threats is their reliance on older, underfunded IT infrastructure and the lack of robust cybersecurity controls. To address these cybersecurity challenges, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has introduced the Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program. This program aims to help schools, school districts, and libraries enhance their cybersecurity postures by providing up to $200 million in reimbursements for the purchase of equipment and services.

The pilot program covers four key categories of cybersecurity, including advanced firewalls, endpoint protection, identity protection and authentication, and monitoring, detection, and response. These categories address different aspects of cybersecurity, from network security to threat detection and response.

To make the most of the FCC pilot program, schools must first assess their current security postures and identify any vulnerabilities.
